BMRC Core Labs Celebrate Publications in JB&JS and NASSJ

BMRC Core Lab members have been published in multiple publications this summer, including the Fall 2025 issue of North American Spine Society Journal (NASSJ) for their study to evaluate risk factors for 30-day hospital readmission following elective decompressive spine surgery and in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JB&JS) for their study on how GLP-1 drugs can be used as a preoperative tool for patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery.

In the NASSJ paper, it was found that predictors of readmission included prior-year hospital admission, age-adjusted Charlson Comorbidity Index and post-op complications, among other predictors. The proposed scoring system used in the study demonstrated superior predictive performance compared to standard risk calculators.

GLP-1 RAs are a promising tool for preoperative weight loss in the patient who is undergoing orthopaedic surgery and has concomitant obesity and type-2 diabetes mellitus. Obesity represents a substantial risk factor for adverse post-op outcomes across a wide range of subspecialties – including orthopaedics.
